About Afroflamenco
Afroflamenco is a cross-cultural musical project led by Senegalese singer and percussionist Sidy Samb, connecting the traditions of West Africa with the sounds and rhythms of flamenco. Born into a Gewel griot family in Senegal and based in Spain for decades, Samb has developed a musical language shaped by both African and Andalusian traditions.
Through Afroflamenco (Dem Dikk), griot tradition, African rhythms and flamenco come together in a vibrant musical dialogue. The project features songs in several languages, including Wolof, Spanish, French and other African languages, reflecting a musical identity that crosses borders and cultures.
Artistic Background
Sidy Samb grew up in Senegal within the Gewel griot tradition, where music, rhythm and oral storytelling form an essential part of cultural life. After moving to Spain, he became deeply involved in the Andalusian music scene and was a founding member of Mártires del Compás, one of the groups associated with the development of contemporary flamenco fusion.
Throughout his career, Samb has explored the connections between African musical traditions and flamenco, combining percussion, voice and rhythm with Andalusian musical language. His work reflects the historical and cultural dialogue between Africa and southern Spain.
Afroflamenco represents the evolution of this artistic journey, bringing together musicians and traditions from different backgrounds to create a contemporary project rooted in both West African music and flamenco.
